Robots & Design

Design plays a fundamental role in engineering and how well its solutions can be implemented in the real world. Pablo Valdivia y Alvarado Ph.D.

About me

pvag3 I am an Assistant Professor in the Engineering Product Development Pillar at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and a Research Affiliate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT and the Center for Environmental Sensing and Modeling (CENSAM) at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). I received my Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering all at MIT. My research interests include design, soft robots and sensors, bio-inspiration, and modeling of biological fluid and mechanical phenomena.

My doctoral work on the design of bio-inspired soft-robots is featured in the permanent exhibition, “A Journey Through Creativity”, at the ARTSCIENCE Museum in Singapore. My contributions to novel vehicles for long-term exploration of harsh environments were recognized with an MIT’s Technology Review 2012 TR35 Young Innovator Award for South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

I am active with the IEEE Ocean Engineering Society (OES) chapter of Singapore, where I have been Chairman and Vice-chairman, and I am also an IEEE RAS, ASME and APS member.

CURRICULUM VITAE

I design simple and elegant mechanisms that exploit natural phenomena to achieve their function by drawing inspiration from nature and a deep understanding of the physics of a problem.
